At UArts, we believe creativity is the true catalyst for social and economic change and the most essential skill for success in today’s society.

The stories documented in this edition of Edge are reflective of this ethos, showcasing the advancements in arts and arts education, visual, performing and media arts carried out by our students, faculty and alumni.

“You’ll be amazed by the astounding depth and breadth of our students’ creative expression, guided by a world-class faculty and staff.”
— KERRY WALK, PRESIDENT

Greetings to the UArts community!

It’s been an honor and a pleasure to join UArts as its fifth president. My first semester is more than halfway over, and I’ve felt enormous joy in being a part of the most creative campus community in the nation. I’ve also enjoyed getting to meet so many of you last month during UArts Weekend, and I hope to meet many more of you in the weeks and months to come. Thank you for your warm welcome!

The UArts mission is to advance human creativity, and I can say with confidence that we’re fulfilling this mission every day. My first months at UArts have been filled with student performances, exhibitions, showcases, and more. I encourage you to attend as many Happenings@UArts as you can. Like me, you’ll be amazed by the astounding depth and breadth of our students’ creative expression, guided by a world-class faculty and staff.

This issue gives us an opportunity to celebrate together. You can read about UArts’ new Student Center and its student-designed murals; this past year’s Silver Star awardees; the younger group of philanthropists who are supporting UArts; the legacy of the legendary Walter Dallas; alumni success; and much, much more.

Nearly 150 years ago, in 1876, the school that would one day become University of the Arts was founded. Today, we can look back on our history of accomplishment in advancing human creativity and feel extraordinary pride. We also look forward to UArts’ next act, which promises to be big, bold, and audacious. Get ready—here we go!

Best wishes,
